Introduction
Physics is the science that deals at the most fundamental level with matter and energy, their interactions, and their transformation. It presents major challenges to the human mind and provides the foundation for engineering and other sciences.

The mission of the Department is captured by the triangle of teaching, research, and innovation.

“By pursing research at the frontier of knowledge and innovation at the cutting edge of technology, the ultimate goal of the physics faculty is to preserve and nurture a sense of wonder about the natural world, and to impart it to the students as a driving motivation for learning.”

The Department of Physics offers rigorous and competitive undergraduate and postgraduate programs in physics. Currently, we have over 180 undergraduate students and over 175 postgraduate students. 16 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze medalists of IPhO (International Physics Olympiad) and APhO (Asian Physics Olympiad) from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Macao, Turkmenistan, Nepal, Mongolia, India, Vietnam and Indonesia had joined our department since 2013.

The Department has 39 full-time faculty members (21 experimentalists and 18 theorists) with significant expertise in the areas of Optics and Quantum Information, Condensed Matter Experiments and Advanced Materials, Condensed Matter Theory, Statistical and Computational Physics, Particle Physics and Cosmology, Soft Matter and Biological Physics, and Wave Functional Materials. Among our faculty members, 14 of them are Fellows of the American Physics Society. Among them, Professor Kam-Biu Luk won the Breakthrough Prize in 2016, while Prof. Xi Dai won the APS James C. McGroddy Prize in 2019, the New Cornerstone Investigator Program by New Cornerstone Science Foundation (新基石科學基金會) in 2023, and the Tan Kah Kee Science Award (陳嘉庚科學獎) in 2024. Several faculty members were also honored with more than one distinguished awards, including the Achievement in Asia Award (AAA Robert T. Poe Prize) from the International Organization of Chinese Physicists and Astronomers (OCPA), Croucher Senior Research Fellowship and Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Award from the Croucher Foundation, RGC Fellowship and Senior Fellowship, and the Excellent Young Scientist Award by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

The Department has a large collection of the state-of-the-art research equipment for laser physics, photonics, quantum materials and physics, surface/interface studies, solid state properties, polymers and liquid crystals, nanostructured layers and clusters, and nonlinear dynamics. A number of central service facilities and interdisciplinary research institutes provide support for the Department's research programs. Particularly relevant are the Materials Characterisation and Preparation Facility (MCPF) and the Nanosystem Fabrication Facility (NFF). Our faculty works on focused topic and interdisciplinary research through several research institutes and centers.
